The formula european championship began on the 29th of july, on the sunny summer shore of Leba poland. Allegro ,the sponsor of the event again put on a sick show for both sailors and spectators on the beach alike. The organisation was really sick, an event i was proud to be a part of. 126 men from many different countries came to try there luck for the right to be european champion and take home a slice of 30,000 prize money.
Due to the large number of competitors the racing was split into 2 fleet for the first 6 races then a gold and sliver fleet was made for the remainding races. Having not raced on my formula much of late i made sure that i was the first out on the water to get some hours logged on the kit. Fortunately for me the Gaastra rigs and formula board are by far the easiest piece's of equipment to rig and sail on the market. hahaha
After the first 6 races, it became clear that this was 5 guys who were in the running for the title. Dennis little was the fastest guy out on the water in the light winds, Jesper Vesterstrom DEN111 one of the hardest working formula sailor on the tour, Gonzalo Costa Hoevel who had only just change sponsors to Execet a couple of days before the event, team mate Steve Allen and myself, finishing consistant in the top 3 in all blue and yellow fleet races.
Next, things started to get real interesting as we race in the gold and sliver fleets which meant we were racing together all the top guys, Racing in 9 to 13 knots prefect 12.m weather i was able to take control of the first 2 races with good starts and the vapor sail and board flying down wind the other guys were unable to catch me. The rest of the day i keep putting in top 5 results and steve also. With one day left Steve was laying in 4th and me in 3rd. This gave a an outside chance at the title.
The final day saw the strength of both us Gaastra boys and the equipment we ride, As the pressure mounted and the wind blow Steve and i pulled in good results in the final 2 races, we battle each other and the 20 to 25 knots of wind. When the dust settled we were tide on points, due to my worst discard, Steve won the event, but i was still happy to have the title of Formula european champion...
I will be going for another title in Portugal at the world champions, I know i have the best equipment to get the job done, so lets see what happens.
GAASTRA 1 AND 2 i think............. |
